The Ludwell family farm 235 cows on around 350 acres on mainly heavy, wet land in West Devon and are highly committed to dairying. They have used high quality Holstein semen for many years and have a high genetic merit herd with excellent capacity and ability to produce large quantities of high quality milk.
Charlie and Linda were recent winners of the 2008 Farmer Weekly Dairy Farmer of the Year Awards. They beat off stiff competition from the two runners up, who were both Kite clients!
The Copes are a hard-working, highly successful specialist dairy farming family. Up until 2004, they had been milking around 260 cows, rearing their own youngstock. It was becoming clear from issues with cell count, cow longevity and work efficiency that the unit needed to develop from the outdated and inappropriate cow set up into something better.
Tomlinson’s Dairies was established in 1983, when brothers Philip and John Tomlinson decided to diversify into liquid milk processing on their family farm in North Wales. Now, over 25 years later, the business is processing over 20 million litres of milk per year for North Wales and the border region.
Milk production on Jersey is integral to the island’s image and self sufficiency. However, it’s a relatively small industry and the costs of production and processing are higher than are seen in mainland UK. If the industry is to be successful over the longer-term and retain the image, product and environmental benefit for the island then the retailer, processor and producer all need to make a sustainable profit margin.
Willow Farm is a 325 acre dairy farming business located in South Norfolk. The dairy herd comprises 176 Holstein Friesians yielding on average 10,000 litres (milk sold per cow). Milk is marketed to Asda, via the Arla Foods Milk Partnership.
